Pipex supplied and fabricated the first ever Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) raised station platform for Valley Station, Cumbria last month.
Otherwise known as the ‘Hump™’ this unique innovation solves the difficult access problems faced by passengers everyday, by lessening the gap between platform and train, thus making entering and exiting the train much easier.
At present many rural platforms are too low for most modern trains and so access can be difficult, particularly for pushchair and wheelchair users. The Hump is a simple platform extension which can be easily lifted into place on top of existing platforms to bridge the gap and make access to the train easier.
This adaptable lightweight unit can be simply installed in any station, and with minimal disruption to commuters and rail workers.

After a fast-track installation the new Hump was officially opened by Jocelyn Davies, the Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration, at Network Rail’s opening ceremony which took place on 14th May.
