FRP Bridges / FRP Walkways / FRP Platforms / FRP Panels

Bridges, walkways, platforms and panels have been built from the same small selection of materials for the last 100 years - generally steel and concrete, with occasional uses of aluminium or timber. However, fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have been used in aerospace and marine applications for over 50 years and are now increasingly being used for structures around the world.

The developments in footbridges have been followed by deck structures and more recently primary structures for road bridges. Around the world numerous bridge decks have been replaced with FRP decks, generally based on pultruded systems and occasionally with moulded structures. In the UK the Highways Agency has recently completed a new road bridge over the M6 motorway, consisting of steel primary beams and a pultruded FRP deck. In Spain a new road bridge has been constructed with 46m long carbon fibre prepreg primary beams
